Lower dentures are designed fit between the pressure of the lower lip and the tongue. Unfortuantely, this prevents the denture wearer from biting down with enough pressure to chew and bite food. Therefore, the denture wearer is forced to cut the food into small pieces and attempt to chew it up. The problem is that when the denture slips (even only slightly out of place) it puts the hard acrylic onto the soft ridge. Since the soft gum tissue overlays the hard bone the patient is very protective in what they eat.Â
To keep dentures in place on a consistent basis it is best to place dentures over dental implants. Dental Implants are titanium screws that heal when placed in the jaw bone. They then fit with a snap fit to allow the patient to chew with great force. Complete denture wearers are only able to chew with 15%-20% of the force they once could with natural teeth. The implant retained denture can improve the forces by 200%-300% over complete dentures.Â
At our Shelby Township, Macomb county Michigan office we provide all levels of care and both place the denture implants and restore them. Because we provide all of the services Dr. Antolak has complete control over the process.
